There are several stores in Kuujjuaq. Stores ranging from novelty
to specialty to general retail.
The
Northern Store, formerly the Hudson's Bay Company, is the oldest
company that has been serving the community. It is the general retail
and grocery store where the community receive fresh meat and produce
along with frozen and dried goods. It also provides fashionable
clothes for all age groups. It's where you can find furniture, electronics,
kitchenware, and hardware among others.
Newviq'vi Inc.,
a fairly new store opened in 1990 for the people living far from
Northern in mind. It began as a tiny general food store and grew
to become the next biggest store in Kuujjuaq. It is located on the
other side of town known as "Across the Creek". Like Northern,
Newviq'vi
has a broad spectrum of retail items as well as groceries. You can
buy your fresh produce and get your hardware at the same time. Another
feature in the store is the "in-house" bakery and kitchen.
They provide fresh baked goods as well as delicious meals in single
serving sizes.
The Fort Chimo
Co-operatives began their membership with the Federation of
Co-operatives of Northern Quebec (FCNQ) in the 1960's and opened
a general retail store.

As with the other two, the
Co-op as it is well known, held retail items as well as groceries.
The store is currently under renovations and will open in the near
future. The FCNQ opened hotels in each of the villages in Nunavik
to accommodate the foreign visitors. The Kuujjuaq Co-op Hotel is
among the newest in Nunavik and can accommodate up to 29 guests.
Novelty stores, arts and crafts stores and specialty shops are
not sparse in Kuujjuaq. Right across from the Kuujjuaq Inn you can
find Tivi Galleries
a souvenir shop that holds precious soapstone carvings, prints,
and ivory jewellery, all made by artisans from Nunavik. A
competitive store just established in the new millennium is Nunavik
Creations. A subsidiary of Makivik, this is a specialty store
that has items such as seal skin jackets designed by a local designer
from Nunavik. It also carries different fashions hand crafted by
local Nunavimmiut. Here you can find hand sewn leather mittens with
fur trimmings, seal skin kamiks, slippers, jewellery and more.
You won't find many novelty stores in Nunavik but you will find
two in Kuujjuaq. The M&M Novelty Store and the Atjiapik
Photo each have unique items that neither of the other stores
carry.
